Poetry - Poems on a Theme: Animals
We will be exploring Valerie Bloom's wonderful animal poems. Read and write rhyming poems, compose a kenning and write a poetry appreciation. We will add description by using adjectives and adverbs and revise sentence punctuation.
Fiction - Stories on a Theme: Picture books from the USA
We will read and enjoy contemporary American picture books including Where the Wild Things Are and It's a Book. We will also revise conjunctions and verb tenses before writing a story about our own fantastic adventure.
Non Fiction: Instructions: - Food stories
Using food-focused stories as inspiration, we will write instructions linked to the characters and themes. We will also revise commas in lists and explore sentence types. Compare the texts read and write a book review.
Our Year 1/2 children learn the English alphabetic code: first they learn one way to read the 40+ sounds and blend these sounds into words, then learn to read the same sounds with alternative graphemes. Lively phonic books are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and 'tricky' words and, as they re-read the stories, their fluency increases. Along with a thought-provoking introduction, prompts for thinking out loud and discussion, children are helped to read with a storyteller's voice.

Maths
Maths
Maths is an adventure for children (and adults) to immerse themselves in, get creative with, make mistakes, and conquer! Power Maths is a whole-class mastery programme designed to spark curiosity and excitement and help nurture confidence in maths. Power Maths rejects the notion that some people simply 'can't do' maths. Instead, it develops growth mindsets and encourages hard work, practice and a willingness to see mistakes as learning tools.
