Albury & Puller Nursery & Primary Schools

Admissions - Albury

If you would like your child to attend our school, please see full details of our admission arrangements below.

The governors are responsible for all admissions to the school and children are admitted in accordance with the school’s agreed Admission Policy.   Our full Admissions Policy is available to download below or from the school office on request.

The headteacher is always pleased to meet prospective parents and to show them around the school.  If you would like to make an appointment to do this, please contact Mrs Rachel Waight, the Office Manager.

Nursery & Reception

Nursery children can start school in the September of the academic year when they are 4.  All Nursery children are entitled to 15 hours of free Nursery care.  We are also able to offer 30-hours free childcare if you are eligible for this.  If you are not currently eligible for the free 30 hours, additional Nursery are still available at an extra cost.   For the academic year 2024/25 extra Nursery hours are charged at £6 per hour.  As a small school we do our best to be flexible on the times when these hours are taken although some sessions may become full.    Applications for Nursery places for September 2025 can be made directly to the school using this form.  Please submit your application by 15th March 2025.

Pre-school
Children may join our pre-school at the start of the next term following their 2nd birthday.    Until the term after their 3rd birthday, these hours are parent funded and for the academic year 2024/25 are charged at £8 per hour.    We offer pre-school session (depending on places) Monday to Friday.   The children can attend mornings only (8.55 am to 11.45 am), morning and lunch (8.55 am to 1 pm) or all day (8.55 am to 3.15 pm).     For children staying over the lunchtime, a school lunch can be ordered or a home packed lunch brought in.    To apply for a Pre-school place, please complete and submit this form. Please also contact the school office on 01279 771253 to let us know to expect your application.

Pre-school, Nursery and Reception children are taught together in a classroom with it's own outside area.  The class is led by a fully qualified class teacher who is supported by three Level 3 qualified teaching assistants.

Starting School

Starting school is probably one of the biggest steps in a child's life.  We hope that at our school it is a happy experience.  Parents/carers are encouraged to visit the school as early as they wish in the years before their child starts school.  Contact between home and school is very beneficial and helps the child settle into school easily.    We have a secure transition process which includes a new parents meeting, home visits and visits to the classroom.   We find that due to this structured transition, the children very quickly settle into school life when they start.

Parents can help their children to be ready for school by: encouraging them to talk and question; providing them with the opportunity and equipment to draw, paint and write; encourage them to enjoy and appreciate books and reading to them.

It is helpful if children can change their clothes and shoes, go to the toilet alone, use a knife and fork and know their full name, address and telephone number.

Above all please talk to your child in a happy, positive way so that the event of starting school is a welcome and exciting experience.

Home & School
We believe that a harmonious relationship between the home and school provides the basis for the successful education of every child.  Parents are welcome to discuss any concerns with the class teacher or headteacher at mutually convenient times.

Parent-teacher consultations are held in the autumn and spring terms when parents can discuss their child's work and progress with the teacher.   A written report is sent to parents during the second half of the spring term.

Transfer appeals

For reception admissions Hertfordshire parents may access the online system via their admissions account which will  not be activated until the relevant national allocation day.  Parents who live out-of-county or who applied on paper need to use the separate appeals online system.  Those parents need to contact Hertfordshire County Council Customer Service Centre on 0300 123 4043 for their registration details in order to gain access, which will be available post allocations. Both systems can be accessed via www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/schoolappeals and following the relevant links on the secondary or primary school appeal pages.
