English
English
Our Year 1/2 children begin each day with either Read, Write, Inc., our chosen phonics program or a Precision Reading session. They learn the English alphabetic code: first they learn one way to read the 40+ sounds and blend these sounds into words, then learn to read the same sounds with alternative graphemes. Lively phonic books are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and 'tricky' words and, as they re-read the stories, their fluency increases.
This is followed by an English lesson which covers a number of key genres and has been designed to inspire children through rich and diverse texts which are current and relevant to the world around them. In order to ensure the curriculum fully matches the needs of all our children we draw upon teaching aspects from a number of core partners: The Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE), Hamilton Trust (HT), Herts for Learning (HfL) and The Literacy Shed. This term our writing is based on lists, labels, captions, stories and instructions to develop sentence structure, retelling and use of imperative verbs.
